GROWING IN CHRIST

"Out With the Old - In With the New"

Date published: 01/20/2014
Matthew 9:16-17 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. Neither do men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved." (NIV)

When you were reborn in Christ, Jesus took you just the way you were and made you new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” Christ did not make your salvation contingent upon the changes needed in your life. Your salvation was only contingent upon Christ’s work on the cross and His love that He lavishes upon you through grace. Ephesians 2:8 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”  When you were saved, you received the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit working within you that produces Christ’s life in and through you. 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into His likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, Who is the Spirit.”  Even though you are a new creation, you still live within your old body. Your daily transformation occurs by yielding every aspect of your life to Christ. Anything you choose not to yield to Christ is similar to pouring new wine into old skins or sewing new cloth to old garments. Your desire to experience more of Christ and the richness of His life can be ruined by clinging to old habits and living your life in a way that puts you first instead of the Lord. God wants to not only bring you abundance and peace, but to also use you for His kingdom purpose. Begin each day asking God to show you any area that you have placed ahead of Him. Ask the Holy Spirit to take control of and transform those areas. Give your life totally to God, so that He can change your old wineskins and old cloth to new wineskins and new cloth!

Isaiah 43:18-19 “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.” (NIV)
