"How Are You Clothed"

Date published: 11/12/2013
1 Peter 5:5 “All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another.”

The weather turned cold again, so I put on a t-shirt, dress shirt, and a fleece top. Three layers to stay warm, but how many layers did I clothe myself with to be humble? Can you put on layers of humility? I am not totally sure, but I do know that humility is an important ingredient to experiencing more of God in your life. A humble heart is like a funnel from God in which He pours His life into yours. God can do a greater work in you when you give Him greater access to you. Humility gives God that access. Peter describes it this way in 1 Peter 5:5, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." What a change in position to have God giving you an extra measure of grace instead of opposing you! God opposes the proud because they operate apart from Him on their own agenda. God extends extra grace to the humble because they are usable and pliable to His will and work in them. It is this type of vessel that God can pour His life through in magnifying His Kingdom on earth. Begin your day by clothing yourself with God’s humility as you fellowship with Him in prayer and Bible reading. Ask God to not only give you a humble heart, but to also prepare you for times when it is hard to be humble. Continue to clothe yourself in humility throughout the day by constantly praying and drawing upon the Holy Spirit’s power to sustain and enable you in humility. If you falter in humility, ask God’s forgiveness and His help in having a humble heart. Humility is God’s greatest vehicle for touching and using you in a world bursting with pride, but lacking humility.

1 Peter 5:6 “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time.” (NIV)
