Colossians 2:8 “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.” (NIV)
Your life is composed of a multitude of decisions that can corrupt God’s work in you. When you come to know Christ as Lord and Savior, you are not only forgiven, redeemed, and set apart for eternity, but your life is also filled with the Holy Spirit for purpose, direction, encouragement, and righteousness. Imagine that your life in Christ is represented by an array of wonderful food ingredients. The Holy Spirit is the Master Chef of your life. The Holy Spirit is there to take this wonderful array of food ingredients that God has uniquely blended in each person’s life to produce not only the fruit of righteousness, but also the fruitfulness that God desires for you. This verse admonishes you to not become victim to the desires of the flesh, the attractions of the world, and deceptions of man’s ideas in your life. Each time this happens, you have inserted an ingredient that is foreign to what God is producing in you. That part of your life becomes temporarily unusable to God. The Master Chef is diverted from preparing something wonderful in you to now trying to draw you back to Himself in those areas that have become unusable to Him. The more deceptions that become a part of your life, the more unusable your life becomes to God. The deceptions that take hold of your life become the gods of your life. Instead of experiencing the fruitfulness of transformation, you experience the fruit of sin and disobedience along with the continual conviction of the Holy Spirit to bring you into alignment with His will so that God’s greatest work can be done in you. A good way to protect you from these deceptions is by daily coming to God for His filling and direction during a time of prayer and Bible reading. Also use this time to have your life sifted by the Holy Spirit for deceptions that might be spoiling the work God desires to do in you. Ephesians 5:13-14 teaches, “But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: ‘Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.’” Passionately seek Christ first, so that He will not only do an incredible work in you, but that you will also experience the longing of God’s heart for you – relationship, purpose, righteousness, fruitfulness, and a life that brings Him glory.
Philippians 1:9-11 “And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ — to the glory and praise of God.” (NIV)
