"Becoming God's Dwelling Place"

Date published: 05/18/2013
Ephesians 2:22 “And in Him (Jesus Christ) you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit.”  (NIV)
Since the Holy Spirit already dwells in you (Ephesians 1:13b “Having believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit”), the focus of this verse is allowing the Holy Spirit to transform your life so that you can experience the abundant Christian life.  This verse gives you two insights on how God might more fully captivate your life.  The first insight is to devote your life fully to God which allows you “to become a dwelling in which God lives by the Holy Spirit.” Ephesians 2:19b-20 (“Fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus as the Chief Cornerstone.”) complements the second insight which is “being built together.”  Your involvement with fellow believers plays an important role not only for God’s work in you, but also for building His church on earth.  Your reciprocal interactions with fellow believers by encouraging, fellowshipping, and teaching one another helps to further activate the work of the Holy Spirit in you.  Devoting your life to God in the fellowship of believers creates the maximum opportunity for God’s Holy Spirit to work in you.  In the Scripture above, “become” is an action word requiring you to apply God’s Word instead of just being a receptacle of God’s truth by merely hearing, reading, and studying the Bible.  James 1:22-25 admonishes us, “Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves.  Do what it says.  Anyone who listens to the Word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.  But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it — he will be blessed in what he does.”  Applying these insights (devoting your life to Christ while being built together in the fellowship of believers) will make you fertile ground for God to abundantly use you through the power and love of the Holy Spirit that dwells within you.
Ephesians 3:17 “And I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts, living within you as you trust in Him.  May your roots go down deep into the soil of God's marvelous love.”  (TLB)
