Luke 7:37-38 “When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume, and as she stood behind Him at His feet weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.” (NIV)
This woman’s devotion and love for Jesus exceeded what was rational in the eyes of the world. Her devotion and love for Jesus was expressed in three ways: 1) She boldly entered the house of high officials to visually express her devotion and love for Jesus. 2) She sacrificed what was probably her most expensive possession. 3) The pouring out of the perfume may very well have represented giving up her trade of prostitution. Not only was she giving up something of great value, but also giving up her source of income, which we applaud. Giving the perfume was a total emptying of self out of her love for Jesus. This is contrasted to Christian sacrifice today which is often expressed out of convenience and measured giving that doesn’t infringe on one’s comfortable safety net. Loving Jesus and following His call on your life is okay – as long as your lifestyle is not noticeably altered or diminished. How did she come to this “emptying moment” and is it possible for you to abandon everything for Christ? This type of experience is not one that evolves from a desire for greater devotion to Christ, but one where you are caught between the magnitude of your unworthiness and the greatness of God’s grace, mercy, love, and magnificence. This overwhelming revelation which comes through God’s Holy Spirit will open your heart to die to self, so that you can give everything to Jesus! You develop this type of experience by passionately pursuing Christ on a daily basis. You pursue Jesus to know Him. The more you know Jesus, the more you will desire to abandon your life to Him. Allow Jesus to be like a water filter that purifies your life to reckless abandonment for Him. Determine now that you desire the “prostitute’s moment” where nothing else matters but having Jesus Christ as your sole desire in life – JESUS IS YOUR LIFE!
