"Enlivening Your Heart to God"

Date published: 10/19/2015
Proverbs 20:5 “The purposes of a man's heart are deep waters, but a man of understanding draws them out.” (NIV)

A wise follower of Christ will heed this verse. Every Christian has been given a new heart. In Christ, your new heart is enlivened to God and the work of the Holy Spirit.  Unfortunately your new heart in Christ is still influenced by your flesh, the world, and the deceit of satan. You have rationales in your heart that are so engrained with deceit and sin that the work of the Holy Spirit is quenched like a lit match soaked by a fire hose. Your heart has dwelt in this condition so long that sin sometimes feels natural. A man of understanding knows this and daily lives life to expose the heart’s shortcomings. This desire is fed by the first beatitude in Matthew 5:8 to better know God so that you experience more of Him, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” (NIV)

As a follower of Christ, you must seek God’s wisdom in how to expose the depths of your heart. Here are some things that help this process: 1) Begin each day meeting with God in Bible reading and prayer. Ask God to expose any impurities of the heart. Mark 1:35 tells us, “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.” (NIV)  2) Call on the Holy Spirit to reveal your heart. 1 Corinthians 2:11b teaches, “In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.” (NIV) 3) Fill your heart with Godly things, so that more of God pours out of your life. Luke 6:45 declares, “The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart.  For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.” (NIV)  4) Passionately devote yourself to God; only He can enliven your heart. 1 Chronicles 28:10 promises, "And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve Him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you.” (NIV)  5) Orient your life around God’s ways in order that you can experience God in all His fullness. Psalm 119:32 proclaims, “I run in the path of Your commands, for You have set my heart free.” (NIV)

Proverbs 27:19 “As water reflects a face, so a man's heart reflects the man.” (NIV)
