"Totally Devoted"

Date published: 03/13/2010

Luke 21:4 “All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on." (NIV)

The interesting thing about this verse is why she gave? People often give to God for reasons other than devotion to Him. Her giving came out of her relationship and devotion to God. The extent of her giving was not limited by a law, her needs, or how much she had, but on an overflowing love and devotion for God. To experience all that God has requires that you put Him first in all that you do. Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Seeking God first represents your ultimate devotion to Him. One of your most difficult challenges in dong this is to break free of the culture. Wealth, money, and possessions are constantly competing for your attention with God. The widow’s giving demonstrated her freedom from the culture and her absolute surrender, reliance, and faith in God. The next time you give consider whether you are giving out of devotion and God’s leading or is your giving motivated and determined by other things?

Psalm 24:1 “The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” (NIV)
Deuteronomy 16:17 “Each of you must bring a gift in proportion to the way the Lord your God has blessed you.” (NIV)
