GROWING IN CHRIST

"Becoming Christ-like"

Date published: 07/13/2015

Luke 6:45 “The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.” (NIV)

This one verse describes every human being on this earth, while revealing how you can get what you desire. Whether you do right or wrong, the source of every action is in your heart. You hear a constant message of how churches are filled with people who are flawed, people will let you down, don’t do business with a Christian, and people are jacked up. It is almost like we are creating a comfortable environment for people to sin. Yes, people do sin, but you should not underestimate the power of Christ in you. This verse not only tells you the source of your actions, but also tells you how to release God’s transforming power in you.

Hopefully you as a Christian want to move more to the good man with good stored up in your heart, and not the evil man with evil stored up. That’s the first hurdle for a Christian – your desires. Do you desire the things of God more than the things of the world? The second hurdle is what goes into your heart. You control what goes in.  So the questions are… what do you desire, do you have the will to walk with God, and are you willing to develop the habits and disciplines to fill your heart with God’s truth?  Are you willing to fill your heart with more of Jesus and God’s truth, or are you content with allowing the world and its evil desires to affect you? Truth says that actions contrary to Christ point to a compromised heart. How do you respond to a compromised heart? Fill it with more of Jesus and His truth. Psalm 40:8 shows how to do this, “I desire to do Your will, O my God; Your law is within my heart.” (NIV)

Don’t buy into the lie that sin in your life is a natural occurrence that you should expect. 1 John 2:6 says that sin reflects your walk with Jesus, “Whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did.” (NIV)  When you fall short, let that be a signal for the need of more of God’s truth in your life. Yes, you live in a corrupt world. Yes, this corrupt world can sway you. But you are a child of God with a new heart – the Spirit of the living God who is constantly instructing and guiding you. God holds you in His hand, but are you willing to allow His work in your life? God can impact your old man, but you must be diligent in filling your heart with God’s truth, responding to the Holy Spirit’s leading, and allowing God to transform your life into the child of God He saved you to be. Colossians 3:16 admonishes you, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.”  (NIV)

2 Corinthians 4:6 “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.” (NIV)
