"Making Jesus at Home"

Date published: 06/22/2015
John 14:23 “Jesus replied, ‘If anyone loves Me, he will obey My teaching.  My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.’” (NIV)

Our last two devotions presented two different mindsets on grasping how obedience brings abundant life. Today’s devotion reveals a third mindset on obedience and how it brings abundance through the satisfaction of God’s abiding presence in you. Today’s verse talks about the love relationship between God and you. Your love relationship grows through obedience resulting in God’s increased presence in you. The picture given in this verse of your love relationship with God becomes up close and personal when Jesus says He and His Father are making their home with you!

Think of how much better you do when the activities of your life are personally explained and coached – how to use a computer, a new car, your cell phone. In the same way, you experience more of God as He settles into His home in your life through the consummating process of obedience. Envision submitting each area of your life to Jesus. Your acts of submission, Lordship, and obedience allow God to wrap His arms around you, take control of your hands, and guide you through life. Through every step of obedience, God’s love and presence further envelopes your life making all of life flourish through His satisfaction, direction, love, and grace.

Your challenge is to stay in the hands of your Creator so that He can live His life through you. Romans 8:9 describes this challenge, “You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you.” (NIV) Are you willing to submit to the Spirit and allow God to fully possess and dwell in you?  Continue to preach the gospel to yourself by fully embracing that it is not you who lives, but Christ living in you. Continue to live your life in Him as described in John 15:4, “Remain in Me, and I will remain in you.  No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (NIV)

Romans 5:10 “For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life!” (NIV)

Do you know someone who needs this message on obedience? If so, forward this devotion to them as a blessing for their growth in Christ.
