"Running to Jesus "

Date published: 06/15/2015
Proverbs 13:13 “He who scorns instruction will pay for it, but he who respects a command is rewarded.” (NIV)

This is the kind of verse that I am good at speed reading through. God says it, so I do it – check. God says if I do what He says, it will be good – check. This time I camped out on scorning instruction and being rewarded. Scripture is filled with similar verses that tie obedience with reward. What more reward can a Christian receive when you already have eternal life? You can’t live any longer than that! You have the Holy Spirit living within you – God, Himself, living in and through you. But there is more – the abundant Christian life talked about in John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” (NASB)  Yes, you have a future, but you were given the Holy Spirit to have abundant life now and to promote the kingdom of God to God’s glory. Abundant life is a reward, but a better word for it is the appropriation of God in your life that produces an abundance of life now that resembles greatly the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23a, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” (NASB)

This gets even better if you further mediate on what is happening. The more you allow God to appropriate His life in you, the more of His life you experience (abundance). Envision Jesus pleading with you like Paul did in Philippians 2:1-2, “If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ (Me), if any comfort from His (My) love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my (My) joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.” (NIV) If you have experienced Jesus in the tiniest of ways, just imagine how much more of Him you could experience by stepping more into Him through obedience. Hebrews 4:2 states it this way, “For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.” (NIV) Every act of obedience is a step of faith. Take hold of this truth and run towards obedience, embracing it fully, so that you can experience more of Jesus in every way!

John 15:9, 11-12 “As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Now remain in My love. I have told you this so that My joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” (NIV)
