John 10:4 “When he (shepherd) has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.”
Christians who fail to know the voice of Jesus are making themselves vulnerable to missing the abundance He talked about in John 10:10: “I have come that they may have life and may have it in all its fullness.” The Bible likens discipleship to raising a child to become an adult. Discipleship today is often mistaken for intakes of Biblical knowledge. Learning truth is good, but it can be a frustrating experience without an understanding of how to step by faith into it. The depth and breadth of Christian truths from the Bible were written to help you experience more of God, but without a proper foundation they can exasperate one’s faith. Ephesians 4:12-15 is an instructive teaching on this: ”To prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.” Your quest to know truth should take you to maturity in Christ - not leave you in a perpetual state of immaturity and fruitlessness. Continually living in this state can begin to numb your heart to hearing and experiencing God. God wants you to engage Him out of a relationship that desires and hungers to experience Him for greater transformation and intimacy. Hearing and knowing God’s voice will help enliven your faith and walk in Christ.
Your relationship with Christ will grow in proportion to knowing His voice. Many Christians are drowning in the world’s ways while lifelessly living the Christian life. In John 8:46-47 Jesus says there are two reasons for not knowing His voice, “If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me? He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God." Either you do not know Jesus as Lord and Savior or you are not pursuing to know and follow Him in an intimate, passionate relationship. To follow and pursue Jesus with a passion to know His voice not only honors Him, but also opens your life to His truth in a way that results in transformation. Practice prayer and Bible reading in a way that actively engages your heart and spirit, to not just learn, but also to be challenged, impressed by what God wants you to do, as well as being convicted in God’s ways. Pray and read the Bible for God to impact your life, so that you can then step out in faith and obedience to experience His truth in you. This posture and response will not only grow your relationship with Christ but will also take you to new levels of growth and fruitfulness in Him. John 10:10 says: “The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy,” while John 10:5 says those who know Jesus’ voice: “Will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger's voice." Do not make yourself vulnerable to the world, satan, and the flesh, but make yourself alive and responsive to hearing Jesus’ voice, so you can follow His voice!
John 8:19 "’Where is your father?’" ‘You do not know Me or My Father,’ Jesus replied. ‘If you knew Me, you would know My Father also.’”
