"Come Build O' Jesus"

Date published: 01/01/2018

Psalm 127:1a “Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain.” (NIV)

As we start the new year I want to pose a fundamental question for every Christian to consider: Is Jesus Christ the builder and sustainer of every facet of your life (house)? For an individual this might include Jesus being Lord of your finances, marriage, children, free time, spiritual journey, job, the person who treats you wrongly, the boss who is not fair, the person you disagree with, the person you are to forgive and every other identifiable activity or relationship. Unless you actively engage God to be the builder of every area of your life you might find yourself living in vain outside His handiwork in those areas where He is not the builder. God gave two commands that summarize all the law in Luke 10:27: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, Love your neighbor as yourself.” (NIV) The command to love God is total. No areas of your life are excluded. In giving this command Jesus did not stop at loving God, but also included loving others. You cannot love God unless you love others, and you cannot love others without loving God. We should be Philippians 2:5-11 Christians: “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: . .” (NIV)

The lens of your life changes when you live this way. Consider these events: Someone you know is hurting; would you want empathy and help in that situation? Someone you know is backed into a corner financially; would you want help or guidance in that situation? Someone you know is behaving inappropriately; would you want to be warned or guided, if acting the same? Someone you know has been broadsided by life; would you want someone to come alongside you for encouragement and help? Everyday life throws challenges and opportunities your way. Do you respond out of self-interest or out of God’s leading and lordship as He builds your house?

Your ability to love as God loves is dependent on your willingness to allow God to build your house. The world looks to self to determine the course of their life while God calls you to look to Him. Doing this allows God to naturally cultivate the fruit of the Spirit in your life. Allowing God to build your house will allow Him to show His face to a lost and hurting world.

Philippians 2:2-4 “Then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (NIV)
