GROWING IN CHRIST

"Gateway to Truth"

Date published: 05/27/2017

John 2:24 “But Jesus would not entrust Himself to them, for He knew all men.” (NIV)

A principle for following Christ is that everything in your Christian walk will flow out of your relationship with Christ. You can inundate your life with Christian knowledge, attend great Bible studies, and hear incredible sermons from the pulpit each week, but it is only out of the intimacy of your relationship with Christ that your life in Christ will flourish. Jesus makes Himself known to you out of relationship and faithfulness, not out of Biblical brilliance. Jesus pours into your life in proportion to the room you make for Him. Jesus knows your heart and, more importantly, your love for Him.

John 3:21 takes this principle a step further: “But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." (NIV) Passionately pursuing Jesus takes you into Him as well as into the light (truth). Truth and your relationship with Christ is a reciprocal bond that feeds one another. Your relationship with Christ will shine light on the truth, thus taking you deeper into truth. The deeper you go into truth, the more you will desire Jesus. Conversely, living in darkness (untruth) will drive Jesus out of your life. John 3:20 describes it this way, "For everyone who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.” (NASB)

In John 3:27 John the Baptist gives great wisdom for recognizing the truth you receive. “To this John replied, ‘A man can receive only what is given him from heaven.’” (NIV) John’s position in ministry was beginning to be diminished by Jesus’ ministry. John’s disciples wanted John to know the seriousness of the situation. Think about this point of decision for John – Was he going to step out of God’s hands and take this situation into his own hands, or would he trust his God? John understood that everything in his life flowed out of his relationship with God, and that everything in his life could only come from God. Next time life begins to implode around you, remember that the only thing that really counts is what comes from God. Double down on your relationship with Jesus, so that His life in you becomes truth. Allow Jesus to live where He has planted you.

Philippians 3:12 “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.” (NIV)
