"Let God Be God"

Date published: 10/10/2016
Hosea 10:12 “Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the LORD, until He comes and showers righteousness on you.” (NIV)

This Scripture gives a picture of living the Christian life. It speaks to the follower of Christ who desires to do God’s will and experience God’s work in his life. It is a great picture for seeing the process of God actively speaking into and working in you.  Let’s break down this Scripture to understand what I am saying:

“Sow for yourselves righteousness” - A true follower of Christ desires to do God’s will and walk in His ways. By faith, this disciple obeys God by stepping into His ways. Following God in obedience is sowing righteousness. You believe God’s Word, trust Him, and by faith obey. In this you are sowing God’s righteousness.

“Reap the fruit of unfailing love” – God’s love always follows faith and obedience.  Many times God works through your obedience to affect others, alter circumstances, or change your life. Regardless of the physical results of obedience, God will indwell you with greater measures of His love, presence, direction, and conviction.

“Break up your unplowed ground” – The effect of a closer relationship with God quite often reveals sin, habits, and attitudes that fall outside of godliness. Your  obedience to confess and repent from sin presents you with another opportunity to draw closer to God. Areas of obedience often uncover (break up) ungodly behavior in your life. Just as a bright light in a room uncovers the dirt in the room, so letting more of God into your life allows Him to reveal sin. The result of breaking unplowed ground is that is allows the soil to become fruitful again.

“For it is time to seek the Lord” – Repentance and confession is like putting on an oxygen mask at high altitudes. The rejuvenation of drawing closer to God becomes a wonderful opportunity to more closely seek what God has for you. Sin often closes doors or obscures what God wants in your life. Learn to follow repentance by seeking God’s will and direction during these times of great enlightenment.

“Until He comes and showers righteousness on you” – The process of faith, obedience, repentance, and seeking God opens your life to experiencing greater measures of God’s righteousness. This walk of faith opens the door to allowing God to be God in your life. Anytime this happens, you draw closer to God, experience more of the fruit of the Spirit, and have a greater sensing of God’s will in your life.

Hosea 6:3 “Let us acknowledge the LORD; let us press on to acknowledge Him. As surely as the sun rises, He will appear; He will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth." (NIV)
